How ACCRUFeR Works

ACCRUFeR® (ferric maltol) is iron you’ll actually take

ACCRUFeR is uniquely formulated with a “maltol shield” that keeps iron protected as it passes through your stomach so it is ready for absorption in the small intestine. This can mean fewer gastrointestinal (GI) reactions like gas, diarrhea, and nausea.

ACCRUFeR’s unique “maltol shield” helps reduce the likelihood of GI side effects.

ACCRUFeR is unique because its iron is protected by a sugar-like substance called maltol. The maltol shields the iron from the stomach so it doesn’t break down earlier than it needs to. This leads to demonstrated absorption in the small intestine and limits the amount of “free” or unabsorbed iron in your body.

Keeping the iron protected from the stomach is key to preventing GI side effects.

  • When iron supplements break down in the stomach, the iron clumps together, making it hard for the body to absorb later.
  • Then, the unbound iron starts to interact with other molecules in the body, which can create highly reactive chemicals. These chemicals can cause damage and irritation in the gut, contributing to unpleasant gastrointestinal effects, like pain, constipation, diarrhea, or nausea.

Tightly bound in the stomach and absorbed in the small intestine

The “maltol shield” protects iron from the stomach, remaining tightly bound to the iron as it passes through. The iron is absorbed in the small intestine, which limits free iron and lowers the risk of damage and irritation. Excess iron is excreted in the stool.

ACCRUFeR’s Unprecedented Tolerability

Intolerable side effects can be a barrier to staying on treatment. ACCRUFeR is different. In clinical studies, fewer than 5% of patients taking ACCRUFeR stopped taking it because of adverse reactions.*

Taking ACCRUFeR

Patients take a 30 mg gluten-free capsule twice a day. Because ACCRUFeR stays intact in the stomach, its iron is ready to be absorbed in the small intestine, so a low dose twice a day is enough to raise iron levels.

ACCRUFeR can be taken on its own. Stool softeners and supplements, like Vitamin C, are not needed to help ACCRUFeR work or to manage side effects.

How should I take ACCRUFeR?

  • Take ACCRUFeR exactly as your doctor tells you. Tell your doctor about any medical conditions and medicines that you currently take, including over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
  • Take ACCRUFeR twice a day on an empty stomach. This may be 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal.
  • Swallow capsules whole. Do not open, break, or chew the capsules.
